Duluth, Minn. - The No. 1 ranked University of Minnesota Duluth volleyball team defended its home court in the 2013 opener, improving to 9-0 on the season in a three-set sweep over Michigan Tech.
Before the match, the Bulldogs honored head coach Jim Boos for his 300th career victory earlier this season. With tonight's 25-14, 25-18, 25-14 win, he sits at 307, just three behind Patti Rolf for the most all-time at UMD.
For the Bulldogs offensively, it was the Monica Turner show: the sophomore middle blocker hit .667 in the match with 13 kills and just one attack error. Also honored before the match for hitting the 1,500 kill plateau, senior outside hitter Kate Lange reached another milestone in the match, clubbing 10 kills to surpass 1,600 for her career. Middle blocker Sydnie Mauch also added ten kills on the night.
Junior libero Julie Rainey led the Bulldogs with 12 digs on the night. Sophomore setter Ashley Hinsch added 41 assists to lead UMD.
The Bulldogs return to the court at Romano Gym on Thursday night as they open conference play against the University of Minnesota-Crookston at 7:00 p.m. UMD has won 17 straight NSIC openers, and 21 straight conference openers overall.
