LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Licenses to participate in Michigan's first wolf hunt in modern times are about to go on sale.

The Department of Natural Resources says 1,200 licenses will be available Saturday at a cost of $100 each for Michigan residents and $500 for out-of-state residents.

The Natural Resources Commission approved the hunt this summer and scheduled it for Nov. 15 through Dec. 31. Opponents are gathering petition signatures for a referendum in hopes of preventing future hunts.

The commission is allowing 43 wolves to be killed in seven Upper Peninsula counties, including Gogebic. Hunters who get a wolf must report it by day's end. Others must check daily to make sure the quota isn't exceeded.

Licenses will be available online, at any authorized license agent and at some DNR offices.
