Duluth, Minn. - It is a red-hot rivalry that is now even hotter. In fact, it will be #1 against #2. UMD is the top ranked team in Division II volleyball and the unbeaten Bulldogs (12-0, 3-0 in NSIC) visit the number two ranked team Friday night.
That would be the once-beaten Concordia-St. Paul Golden Bears (11-1, 3-0 in NSIC) and CSP is the six-time defending National Champions. CSP is also the last team to defeat UMD, doing so in last year's postseason. These teams also played a '1-vs-2 battle' back in 2010, with the Golden Bears rated number one. UMD fell in that match, 3-0. All-time, the Bulldogs lead the series 21-17.
"They (CSP) are just a great team and run their system very, very well and they don't really have to rebuild each year, they just kind of reload and they have great players and do great things, says UMD senior OH Kate Lange.
"I am happy with our start. We have had some troubles early, but we sort of ironed some things out as we have gotten better and we are playing pretty well right now and I hope that can carry over to the weekend," says UMD Head Coach Jim Boos.
UMD faces CSP at the Ganglehoff Center on the campus of Concordia-St. Paul on Friday. Opening serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
