SOMERS, Wis. (AP) - New hires for top posts within the University of Wisconsin System could be in line to make some lucrative salaries.
The UW System's board of regents approved a new pay plan Friday. It expands the range of salaries that can be offered to certain new hires.
For example, the outgoing UW System president makes $418,000. Under the new plan his replacement could make anywhere from $399,000 to $598,500.
The regents say they understand the new pay scales may not resonate with the public. But they say it's important they be able to offer competitive salaries when recruiting top talent.
Republican state Rep. Stephen Nass says the move shows how out of touch the regents are. He says while Wisconsin families are struggling, the board is rewarding the "administrative elite."
