A matter of days after learning the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon would be canceled because of a lack of funding, Eyewitness News has learned that it's back on.

According to Beargrease board Vice President Geoff Vukelich, who stepped down in Monday night's board meeting, the race is back on after a leadership change. He said the board approved the move about five minutes after it was first proposed.

Tone Coughlin, with the NorthShore Inline Marathon, will serve as the interim president. Coughlin said a handful of other new people will also take on leadership positions. He said they will work with marketing and advertising professionals to bring in mushers and new money.

Vukelich said "how can you not but smile? I mean it's great." He said the fact that they came in and wanted to take on the task is "amazing."

Vukelich, who had been on the board for a decade, said he doesn't care who runs the race. He said the important thing is that it continues.
