MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Democratic candidate for governor Mary Burke says she does not support a statewide expansion of private school vouchers and would have opposed the one Gov. Scott Walker approved in this year's budget.
Burke told the Wisconsin State Journal that if elected she would keep the 1,000 student enrollment cap in place. Burke says she would also seek more accountability for private schools receiving public money in Milwaukee.
Burke says no research justifies statewide expansion of the program, which until this year had been limited to just Milwaukee and Racine.
Also, the influential liberal group Progressives United announced Tuesday it is backing Burke. The group was founded by former U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold and decided to endorse Burke after polling its members.
