For 8-0 Moose Lake/Willow River, the regular season is a warm-up. Head coach Dave Louzek and the Rebels know the real battle starts this week in the postseason.
"Our main program goal is to be in the section finals every year, gives us a chance to be in the state tournament," Louzek said. "So that undefeated record is a great thing, a great accomplishment for sure, but not one of our main goals as a team."
Senior running back/linebacker Jon Evenson and the team were happy to prove that even as a young team, the Rebels can be dominant.
"It's the same amount of work that's going into it so the age of the team doesn't make that much of a difference," Evenson said. "It's the same thing being accomplished."
"We had to replace the whole backfield, including the quarterback," said Ezrah Szczyrbak, senior offensive guard/defensive end. "It was kind of a rough transition but it's now starting to click."
For the first time, Moose Lake/Willow River's unbeaten record has earned them a first round bye. The extra rest is nice, but Louzek says this is no time to get complacent.
"Having that undefeated record, it's real easy to pat yourself on the back and think you're already there," Louzek said. "For these kids, seeing the success of the kids who have come before them, they know better. They know they still have to work."
Winning the section will take even more hard work and dedication. The Rebels say bring it on.
"Staying after practice, watching film regularly, working out before and after practice," Szczyrbak said. "Continuing to work hard as a Rebel group and keeping the Rebel tradition going."
They'll do whatever it takes for another shot at a state title.
"I ask them to make a commitment, to make sacrifices to be a great football team," Louzek said. "As a coach, I'm very proud of them for making that commitment to our program."
