The people of Poplar have a passion for hunting. So much so that during rifle season, there are a lot of empty seats at Mission Covenant Church.

"A lot of guys are out in the woods," said Steve Cornelius, youth pastor. "They'll be gone the first opener of rifle season, but they're usually back on the second weekend."

Seventeen years ago, the church started an annual hunters expo to serve the community in more ways than one.

"We enjoy hunting and we enjoy the outdoors and we love to have people come in and just have a day where they can spent time together as a family," Cornelius said.

Hundreds of folks stopped by to enjoy the locally made food, check out seminars, and gear up for the season.

"Personally I love the chili," said Susan Berggren. But I also like looking at the mounts. The deer mounts and the racks are amazing, and to see what local people have gotten."

Nola Lebrecht was one of 25 vendors at the expo. She says events like this are popping up in communities all over Wisconsin and beyond.

"Hunting expos are becoming very popular church events," Lebrecht said. "It's a great way to meet and greet people who have a hunting passion, and see some tremendous deer."

Whether you enjoy the solitude of hunting, or prefer it as a family affair, it's time to dust off the blaze orange. Because hunting season is right around the corner.
