A Minnesota Power substation on the Iron Range could be connected to a new, international transmission line in the future.
Minnesota Power has applied for a certificate of need from the state's public utilities commission for an approximately 240 mile line.
The Great Northern Transmission Line would carry renewable hydropower from Manitoba in Canada to the Range.
The line itself will be co-owned by Minnesota Power and Manitoba Hydro. The project represents hundreds of millions of dollars of investment.
