One man is in custody after a high speed chase through Hermantown and Duluth around 11 p.m. Wednesday.
The chase began after law enforcement tracked down a car that had been stolen from the Iron Range using the vehicle's On-Star system. It was headed south on U.S. Highway 53 toward Duluth.
Hermantown police gave chase, and the driver allegedly lead them at high speeds past Miller Hill Mall in the fog. The chase ended on Central Entrance just up the road from Mesaba Ave. after the driver crashed.
Officers had a short standoff with the lone male occupant, which ended with the peaceful arrest of a 50-year-old Chisholm man. He is also accused of stealing the car along with cash and credit cards from an acquaintance in Chisholm.
The suspect was initially taken to the St. Louis County Jail and later transferred to a hospital for medical treatment. He is expected to face felony charges of possession of stolen property and fleeing police in a motor vehicle and misdemeanor charges of possession of stolen property and driving after revocation.
