Quick thinking by an experienced fisherman saved the life of a deer on Sunday.
The doe fell through the ice on Nichols Lake, according to resident Jill Schofield. The lake is southwest of Cotton. Schofield said her neighbor Jeff Slygh, an experienced fisherman, went out in his canoe to save the deer.
After falling into the water once and cutting through the ice for about an hour, Schofield said Slygh was able to get to the deer. She said the deer struggled at first, but when Slygh got it into his canoe the doe was completely calm.
The pair made it to shore in Slygh's canoe, both of them exhausted but safe.
