Duluth, Min. - Two decades as a program and the UMD women's soccer team is preparing for their biggest match ever and they get to do so at home at Malosky Stadium.
After edging NSIC rival Winona State 1-0 this past Sunday in the Division II Second Round, the Bulldogs host another NSIC rival and that is Southwest Minnesota State on Friday afternoon at 2:30 pm in the Central Region Final as part of the NCAA Division II National Tournament. On Thursday, the Bulldogs braved some cold conditions outdoors during practice. Friday is supposed to be chillier, but the Bulldogs plan to bring the heat.
"The weather is one thing, but the team dynamic and how excited we are to play the biggest game of our life tomorrow and it just overcomes the weather, so the weather doesn't matter," says junior forward Maureen Stormont.
"It is a great way to celebrate our 20th season and the players really took that to heart from the first day of the season and they wanted it to be special and they have done that, it is just a great feeling and it is a definite high water mark for our program," says Head Coach Greg Cane.
UMD will also host to the Midwest Region Final between Grand Valley State (Mich.) of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and Quincy (Ill.) of the Great Lakes Valley Conference. That match is Friday at 1:00 pm. The winners of each regional final will meet in the NCAA Division II Quarterfinals at Malosky Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
