The Duluth Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause of a fire in a Lincoln Park duplex early Sunday morning.

The occupant of the second-floor apartment at 320 N. 27th Ave. West told firefighters he awoke to a loud noise and discovered the fire in a storage room.  He tried to put it out with a fire extinguisher and evacuated before firefighters arrived.

Smoke was coming from multiple windows on the second floor of the duplex when firefighters arrived.  Police officers helped the occupant of the lower apartment out of the building.  No one was injured.

The fire was quickly extinguished, but crews remained on scene for more than two hours to assist fire investigators.

The fire department estimated damage at $20,000.
