LANSING, Mich. (AP) - A pro-hunting coalition will start collecting petition signatures to protect Michigan's ability to hold future wolf hunts.
Citizens for Professional Wildlife Management received approval of its petition form from the state Monday.
The measure would let the Natural Resources Commission name game species. If enough signatures are gathered and lawmakers pass the law, it could neuter attempts to prohibit wolf hunts. If legislators don't act, the measure would go to voters.
The state says hunters killed 17 wolves in the Upper Peninsula through Monday morning.
Anti-wolf hunt forces gathered enough signatures to require a 2014 referendum on a law classifying the wolf as a game species. Lawmakers enacted a second measure authorizing the Natural Resources Commission to make the same designation, and activists are seeking a referendum on that, too.
