Southbound I-35 to Reopen Wednesday

The Minnesota Department of Transportation says a two-mile stretch of Interstate 35 in Duluth will reopen in the mid-morning hours on Wednesday.

The southbound lanes have been closed from Lake Avenue to 21st Avenue West since Nov. 18 for emergency repairs.  Inspectors had discovered deterioration in seven pilings that support one pier holding up the southbound lanes.

MnDOT said a system used to stabilize the bridge during the repairs will be removed Tuesday.  MnDOT crews will then have to clear snow from the closed roadway and entrance/exit ramps.

"I want to thank the public for their patience during this unexpected closure. We know it was a big inconvenience for many people and was made even worse by the record snowstorm," said Duane Hill, MnDOT District 1 engineer, in a press release. "We’re glad the repairs are completed and traffic can return to normal."

Drivers have been detoured on Lake Avenue, 3rd Street, Mesaba Avenue, and Michigan Street.  Traffic has been heavy, especially during last week's snowstorm.
