Opponents of the the new copper-nickel mining being proposed in Northern Minnesota are gearing up for the public comment period.
The DNR and other agencies released the 2,200 page supplemental draft EIS for the Polymet project Friday. Former Ironworker Bob Tammen spoke out against the project in Duluth on Monday. Tammen says he and others have concerns about water quality issues. And he wishes the public comment period for the document, which starts December 14th, was longer.
"This draft EIS is over 2,000 pages of technical information. people are concerned what's going on minnesota mining area. I believe we should have more than 90 days to comment," said Tammen.
He believes Northern Minnesota should diversify its economy away from mining.
When asked about the science behind the environmental review, he said that companies are often granted variances, and that some state standards are not vigorously enforced.
PolyMet maintains that they can do this new type of mining and protect the environment at the same time.
