A teenager is in custody after an alleged homicide in Ashland on Monday night.
The incident happened at 1806 Cary Street. The Ashland Police Department identified the victim as William J. Saari, 52.
Police said a 14-year-old male is in custody.
The entire 1800 block Cary St. was blocked off while police continued their investigation Tuesday morning. The barricades, however, didn't stop neighbors from wondering what happened.
"They were good neighbors, very quiet," explained Stacey Delgado, who lives in the neighborhood.
Delgado and her parents knew Saari well. She heard the sirens Monday night, but didn't think anything of the added noise.
"I was in bed so I just kind of went to the window and looked out. I just figured it was someone getting pulled over," she said.
The next morning, she was shocked to hear it wasn't a speeding ticket across the street, but a homicide involving her neighbor.
Paul Bietka also lives in the neighborhood, a few blocks away. She knew Saari, calling him a "very friendly man."
Bietka has lived in the area for nearly 30 years and has never seen or heard such a commotion.
"I was watching TV and I heard shots and I didn't think anything of it, I thought maybe I'm hearing things, and then I heard it again," she said.
Police haven't released details surrounding how Saari died, but neighbors said the 14-year-old boy did live in the home.
"Our younger sister and our nephew hung out [with him], they went to school together," said Jessica Childress, Delgado's sister.
The investigation is ongoing.
