An Iron Range musher is busy training for not one, but two major races. One is familiar, the other is new territory.
Nathan Schroeder is planning to run the Beargrease, which is coming up next month along the North Shore. Then he'll head to Alaska for the big one -- the Iditarod, covering over 1,000 miles of remote, treacherous Arctic landscape.
To get ready, Sunday Night Schroeder and his team of dogs put on 100 miles, which is more than usual.
"60 miles is probably my furthest run for Beargrease, on average," Schroeder said. "I'm going to step it up a little bit here, the Iditarod's three times farther - better train three times harder!"
Schroeder said he expects it to be windy and extremely cold during the Iditarod, which is coming up on March 1.
