OSHKOSH, Wis. (AP) - The University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh has launched the state's first virtual student teaching program.

Oshkosh Northwestern Media reports the program started this fall with student teacher Mike Wilbert. He taught an online class for nine weeks and then did nine weeks of traditional, in-person student teaching.

The program got started after some virtual teachers spoke to students in professor Stacey Skoning's special education methods class at UW-Oshkosh.

Skoning says some of her students will likely go on to teach in virtual schools, and she wants them to be prepared.

Oshkosh schools Deputy Superintendent Dave Gundlach says his district is incorporating online teaching into its programs and applicants with experience in both online and traditional teaching will stand out.
