Duluth, Minn. - They are off and when the mushers competing in the 30th running of John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon return, they will have experienced the Northland in a very unique way.
The mid-distance competitors will go 150 miles while the marathoners are going 400 miles up and down the North Shore in the longest sled race in the lower 48 states.
Back in October, the 2014 Beargrease was actually cancelled due to a lack of funding, until new organizers changed that.
The 2014 race gives defending champion and two-time winner Nathan Schroeder of Chisholm a chance to defend his title.
"Just stay upbeat about it, if the weather brings you down, you are going to be down and your dog team is going to be down and so, I try to stay positive with the weather and the outcome is a positive dog team and positive dogs run real nice," says Schroeder.
