Near Grand Marais, Minn. - Former Beargrease Champion Keith Aili of Ray has the lead at the end of the second day of the 2014 John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon, with last year's champion and two-time winner Nathan Schroeder of Chisholm in second.
According to the Beargrease website, Aili has averaged a speed of 8.5 miles per hour. The next stop will be the Devil Track checkpoint, which is about 60 miles away. On Monday night, Aili told Eyewitness Sports that he and his dogs were planning to make the trip through the night time, with temperatures expected to be around -20 and a wind chill of -40.
"We are allowed only so much layover, so we are going to have to go run tonight right through it and tonight is going to be the longest run of the whole race and it is a 60 mile run and it is going to be tough. I am feeling good because this last run, you could really tell if your team is coming together or not and so, I am happy. I have a team to race with, so I am happy," says Aili.
Eight mushers remain in contention. The 400 mile marathon wraps up on Wednesday.
