ATLANTA (AP) - A rare snowfall has brought Atlanta to a halt.

Interstates were clogged this afternoon as commuters ended their workday early. Downtown, office security guards and doormen took to the streets to try to direct traffic amid blaring car horns. At the city's airport -- the world's busiest -- hundreds of flights were canceled.

The Georgia Department of Transportation says heavy traffic has been complicating efforts to treat area roads and highways. Crews were working to clear snow and ice accumulations on interstates in the Atlanta area, as well as in central and northwestern Georgia.

Footage from local television stations showed several freeway ramps that were clogged with heavy traffic and disabled semi-trucks.

Transportation officials are urging Georgians to refrain from driving - especially after dark - as black ice accumulations are expected to develop.
