Minnesota state lawmakers are considering changing the law to provide money for a shared school on the range.

Virginia, Mt. Iron-Buhl, and Eveleth-Gilbert, are considering sharing a new facility in Mt. Iron.

A proposal to pay for the school includes creating a trust fund for construction using taconite taxes, and requiring mining companies to pay an additional tax.

But the mining industry wants to avoid new taxes.

Instead, leaders say they're hoping to work together to find some existing taxes that are already being paid, and direct those dollars to the new facilities.

A senate bill about the new school was amended, and recommended to pass Wednesday.

It will be re-heard in the finance committee.
