In this Medical Minute, a surprising impact of stress. Researchers are finding that it could significantly reduce your ability to get pregnant. ABC's Dr. Timothy Johnson reports.

Stress...an inherent part of daily life and, according to a new study, the enemy of fertility.

Researchers in Michigan and Texas studied nearly 400 couples trying to become parents. They followed them for 12 years and found that potential moms who had higher levels of stress, faced a longer wait for pregnancy. Plus an increased lifetime risk for infertility. In fact, these prospective mommies had a 29% reduction in the ability to conceive.

So potential parents: Consider meditation, yoga, exercise, or just a good deep breath now and then. Whatever it takes to kick that stress to the curb... as pressure and procreation don't seem to get along.
