Spring is officially here, and around this time of year, a lot of people start to slow down on their workouts. We joined fitness instructor Mike Feist, of Fitness by Feist, and he told us a little bit about how to keep some spice in your normal workout routine.
"The concept of intervals are pretty interesting," Mike tells us. Using intervals can give a big benefit when built into your exercise routine. With intervals, you can do a shorter workout, but you need to bring your heartrate up into about 80% of your maximum for short bursts, and then lower it down to around 70%, over and over again.
Mike, Brittany and Ben demonstrated different ways of getting your heart rate up. But be sure to consut with your doctor to make sure you are healthy enough to increase your level of activity.
First, Mike brought them over to the spin bikes, which he says are an "awesome way to get your heart rate up." After you warm up, crank up the tension a bit and stand, and your heart rate will head right up. Keep it up for a minute or two, then cool down a little, then repeat!
Mike showed them skaters next! This is a great workout where you can really push yourself, and something you can do in your own home. High knees are also great for in-home. Be sure to keep your knees up high!
And finally, the burpees! These are tough to do, but you can modify it for your own ability Mike tells us. Again, this is something you can do pretty much anywhere to get your heart rate up.
"I wanted to show you guys that you [can exercise] anywhere. If you already have a membership at a gym, [otherwise] you can do it at your studio apartment. You don't need much space, just use your bodyweight, and get your heart rate up." But Mike reminds us not to do intervals, and the hard work, at every workout. He says to do this type of workout 1 to 3 times a week, to start slow, and then build your way up.
