Are you ready for the smelt parade?
Organizers of the third annual "Run Smelt Run Parade" held the first in a series of workshops Tuesday night to help people create puppets, masks, and costumes for the unique event. Jim Ouray with the Magic Smelt Puppet Troupe said it's a fun event in the spirit of Carnival in Brazil or Mardis Gras in New Orleans.
"It's kind of nonsense but it's an opportunity to celebrate those things that we often take for granted like the water and the phenomenon of the abundance of the earth, I mean the smelt run is really an incredible phenomenon," Ouray said.
The smelt parade is set for Sunday, April 27 at 2 p.m. It'll begin near the Maritime Visitor Center next to the Aerial Lift Bridge.
If you want to help, organizers will be holding workshops every Tuesday and Thursday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to Noon and 2 to 4 p.m. for the next three weeks. The workshops are being held at 134 West 1st Street.
