The teammates of slain former UMD softball player Mandy Matula dedicated their home opener Friday to the 24-year-old woman who was killed last spring.
Matula was killed in May of last year, but her body was not found for six months after that.
When her remains were recovered, she was found with her UMD sweatshirt that bore her jersey number: 14.
That is the number each player was wearing when the UMD Bulldogs softball team suited up for Friday's doubleheader against Augustana
Gary Holquist, UMD's director of athletic development, says it was a touching gesture.
"The softball team wanted to honor Mandy and bring awareness to violence against women," Holquist explained. "Mandy was such an important part of our existence as an athletic department. This will be the first time in the history of UMD athletics that someone in our sports programs will have their number honored and retired."
Matula's jersey will be officially retired sometime next fall.
