First Saltie of the Year Arrives in Harbor, Gets Stuck in Ice

After a record-breaking winter that left several feet of ice on Lake Superior, Wednesday was supposed to be a celebration of spring with the start of saltie season.

The 453-foot Diana was scheduled to arrive Wednesday morning, but the thick ice proved to be insurmountable. The Duluth Port Authority then estimated that the Antigua and Barbuda-flagged ship would make its way under the Aerial Lift Bridge by 8 p.m. Again Wednesday night, the ice proved too thick for the ocean-going vessel.

As of 11:00 p.m., Diana was still struggling in the Harbor as tug boats, a cutter, and even a laker tried to cut her free.

The Port Authority says that even if Diana makes it before midnight, May 7 would still be the latest arrival for a saltie in Twin Port's history. May 3, 1959 had been the previous record - the very first year that the St. Lawrence Seaway opened.
