Doppler radar produced a massive radar echo along the Mississippi River near La Crosse on Sunday, July 20. Where there storms in the area? Nope.  They were just mayflies.

According to the National Weather Service, the mayflies emerged from the water and became airborne.  The flying bugs were then detected by the radar around 8:45 PM.  Reports from La Crosse regarding the mayflies swarming came rolling into the National Weather Service.

Pictures were shared of the incident from around La Crosse.

The radar detected the flies about 845 pm, emanating from the Mississippi with radar values similar to that of light-moderate rain (35-40 dBZ). With a general south-to-north wind flow above the surface, the mayflies quickly moved north once in the air. As the flies dispersed moving north-northeast.
