The City of Rochester could be headed toward bankruptcy, that’s according to a New York Post article. It claims Rochester, Syracuse and Yonkers are in serious financial trouble and may need a bail out from the state.
Rochester City Spokesperson Gary Walker said “The city is not near bankruptcy period.” News10NBC went to city hall for that answer after several of our calls to city hall were not answered.
The New York Post article states Rochester, Syracuse and Yonkers are near bankruptcy and looking for a bail out from Albany. A source in the article states the mayors of these three cities have held secret talks in recent weeks about their financial options and the possibility of bankruptcy has come up.
The mayors issued a joint statement saying, “The cities of the New York are not looking for any handouts. We have repeatedly cut services and employees. Budget gaps that are soon to appear in cities across the state are too large to be bridged from within those cities.”
Gary walker says while the mayor has been meeting with the governor's administration. He has not approached them with any numbers.
