Gates Chili senior Kevin Gear carries a 92 average and has taken six APs.
Kevin Gear, Gates Chili Scholar Athlete, said, “Probably the hardest are physics and calculus, but I’ve always been good at Math and Science so when you get to APs, it gets harder.”
He hopes to pursue a career in civil engineering or architecture. He says it all started at home.
Gear said, “Everyday things around my house my mom would want me to fix, I would do it and it became a passion of mine to work with my hands. I don’t want to be trapped in an office all day with one of those jobs.”
Gear volunteers for his church, works 15 to 20 hours a week at McDonald's and plays in the school marching band, another passion since the fourth grade.
Gear said, “Places we've gone, we've met famous players, we get to meet them, the whole experience is really nice.”
On top of all that, Gear is captain of the volleyball team, a sport he took up as a sophomore. He leads the team in kills, aces and blocks.
Gear said, “The first year was rough. I was raw. I stuck with it, made a club team and improved. It is great.”
Gear will continue to play club volleyball and also tennis in the spring.
Gear said, “It’s hard with work, school, sports, and homework, but it’s what you have to do when you go to college.”
