Forecasters say Hurricane Sandy is speeding up and should make landfall early Monday evening in southern New Jersey.
The National Hurricane Center said the storm's top sustained winds were holding at near 90 mph, with higher gusts.
The storm's center was about 110 miles southeast of Atlantic City, N.J., and headed northwest at 28 miles per hour.
Sandy is on track to collide with a wintry storm moving in from the west and cold air streaming down from the Arctic. The combination superstorm could menace some 50 million people in the most heavily populated corridor in the nation, from the East Coast to the Great Lakes.
