A Rochester man is under arrest after investigators say he set fire to a house while two children were trapped inside.
The Rochester Fire Department's Arson Task Force says 37-year-old Jerome Tavolino was taken into custody on Saturday after officials say he purposely set a Kilmar Street house on fire.
Firefighters say they responded to the fire Friday morning around 9 a.m. Upon arrival, crews found fire and smoke coming out of the windows and residents evacuating the building. Officials say they were able to quickly extinguish the fire and determined that it has been purposely set.
When the fire began, investigators say that an 11-year-old boy and his 3-year-old sister were both in the house and were trapped by the fire on the second floor. Luckily, both were able to escape when the boy woke up his sister and pulled her through the bedroom window onto a garage roof. The children were then helped off the roof by a neighbor.
Tavolino is charged with arson and is being held in the Monroe County Jail. Investigators say the fire is related to an ongoing domestic dispute.
