Sectional titles in high school football were handed out at Sahlen's Stadium and now our best head to the state quarterfinals.
The East Rochester/Gananda Football Team clinched their first sectional title in 27 years, last week defeating Livonia. They are the underdogs heading into this weekend's state quarterfinals. That's nothing new for the team's head coach who says every play counts and so does every vote.
The jury is still out on whether Dennis Greco and his Bombers can beat powerhouse Alden of Section VI on Saturday. The jury is also still out on whether Greco will win his race for town justice in East Rochester against Dave Bonacci. Only five votes separate the two in a race that's still undecided. But Greco has already scored an important victory in the court of public opinion by bringing a title back to the home of the champions for the first time in 27 years.
Greco said, “The messages, Facebook, it's been something that's exciting for both communities.”
While votes are counted, Greco counts on his team. Led by a group of 11 seniors who finished last season at 3-5 and didn't like how that felt, the state quarterfinal against Alden is just one more step.
Greco said, “The seniors who played last year committed themselves to change that and it's worked out well for them.”
Alden is unbeaten with a dominate running back that will be difficult to stop.
Zach Hauser, junior, said, “They're big but that's fine. We've beaten teams bigger than us we have to come out hard.”
This gutsy group isn't afraid of the odds. They've watched their coach, a retired social studies teacher who spent his career teaching kids about the importance of participating in government , is an example of taking what you want a step further.
LaFountain, senior, said, “We weren't satisfied. We weren't happy with just sectionals.”
East Rochester/Gananda face Alden at All High Stadium on Saturday at 3pm. The votes in the East Rochester Town Justice race will be tallied by Tuesday.
