At least five fire departments responded Thursday night to a fire at 168 Niagara Street in Canandaigua. The 6,474 square-foot wood building, formerly the home of Antiques Unlimited, and prior to that, a garden store, was built in 1900 and was once a grain mill. It is flanked on one side by residential buildings and the other by railroad tracks and an empty lot.
The fire engulfed the block with smoke, and drew firefighters from Crystal Beach, Hopewell, Canandaigua, Cheshire, and the Canandaigua VA Fire Departments. Roads were blocked for several hours as firefighters worked to control the scene.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
