News10NBC is just about to embark on the 13th annual News10NBC Pirate Toy Fund Drive.
For a week, starting Monday, News10NBC will be collecting toys at Wegmans and our crews will be live at the malls this year. You can bring new, unwrapped toys and help us reach our goal of 14,000 toys in a week.
The University of Rochester Medical Center's Surgical Center at Sawgrass is for outpatient surgeries and since there are more than 100 surgeries done per week on children, it's important that their closet is filled.
Registered nurse Kathleen Walther maintains the closet, the toys come from the Pirate Toy Fund.
Walther said, “It's fun. It's kind of like Christmas every time we get a delivery.”
Sawgrass is one of more than 75 programs and facilities that receive the donated toys and in turn the toys go to children about to undergo surgery.
Children handle anxiety in different ways and being able to play with something and something new before surgery, it kind of gets them the idea that maybe it's not such a bad thing.
Walther said, “It helps the staff also because we feel for these children. We feel their anxiety and want them to be more comfortable so by giving them the toys it helps both sides and give the children something positive to come out of this.”
You can bring a new, unwrapped toy to one of the live locations throughout the week. You can sign up for a chance to win tickets to see Sesame Street Live! when the some comes to Rochester next year.
News10NBC be live Monday through Wednesday at Eastview Mall and Thursday and Friday at Marketplace Mall. News10NBC will wrap up at the Mall at Greece Ridge on December 8. Our goal is 14,000 toys.
