Organizers at the Martin Luther King Jr. Greater Rochester Commission held a luncheon Sunday to celebrate the life and legacy of the reverend.
Rochester Police Chief James Sheppard was the keynote speaker at the event. He spoke to News10NBC about the importance of keeping the memory of Dr. King alive.
“Well I think the main thing is the fact that Martin Luther King, the man that he was, the principles that he stood for, the character that he demonstrated, and I think it's very important not to forget about it, keep it in the forefront, and for us to encourage our young people to emulate it as well,” said Chief Sheppard.
Organizers say the event serves as a precursor to the celebrations that take place all over the country in January in memory of Doctor King.
