The Rochester Fire Department says two people were able to safely escape after their home caught fire early Saturday morning.

Firefighters say they received calls for the fire at a home on Lake Avenue at about 12:30 a.m. Saturday.

When crews arrived on scene they found the fire had spread from the first floor to the second floor and into the attic. It took units about 40 minutes to get the fire under control. Chief Salvatore Mitrano says it was a difficult blaze to fight because of the size of the house.

"The first floor and the attic sustained the most damage,"says Chief Mitrano. "It went up the walls and broke out a little bit on the second floor. You can look at that house, the attic was huge and it was a task to get up there and get at the fire."

Chief Mitrano says nobody was hurt during the blaze. The cause of the fire is not yet known.
