The plan to build a new train station in downtown Rochester is full steam ahead.
Federal, state and local leaders made the announcement at the current Amtrak station on Central Avenue. It was actually built 35 years ago and was only supposed to be temporary.
Now plans will move forward for a new $23-million dollar Rochester Intermodal Transportation center at the same site. Amtrak agreed to own and operate it.
Congresswoman Louise Slaughter says this new state of the art facility will ensure high-speed rail will not by-pass Rochester and spoke about future plans to bring high speed rail to Rochester. “What we ask for high-speed rail is to allow us to use an extra part from one of the unused rails to build a track for high-speed rail and we expect that to happen but I'm so excited about getting the station done too.”
Slaughter says she wants the new train station built soon.
News10NBC is told construction will help create hundreds of new jobs. No word yet on a specific date.
