NYS Thruway Authority to use beet juice to pre-treat roads

Thruway authorities are tackling winter roads in a new and innovative way.

They are using beet juice -- an anti-icing mix of sugar beet juice and brine -- to enhance the impact of the salt.

The New York State Thruway will deploy more than 600 workers and more than 200 plows to help fight winter-weather conditions this year.

They say pre-treating with beet juice could reduce the need for overtime staffing.
