A local group is ready to pass out hundreds of toys to families in need but will there be enough to go around?
The Brockport Toy Shelf has been helping families in need through out the Brockport Central School District for around 12 years but this year is a little different than the rest. Donations have been coming in a little slower than usual and it’s causing concerns since Christmas is just days away.
So far, 216 families have signed up to receive gifts this weekend. The organization is expecting to hand out toys to more than 600 kids but the problem is there doesn’t seem to be enough and now organizers are concerned many kids will be left without Christmas gifts this holiday season..
“So many people don't realize that there are so many people in our school district that are needing.” For coordinators Ruthann Tryka and Charlene Veltz, this is usually the most wonderful time of the year, mainly because they get to help hundreds of families in need. “One year a woman came up and insisted that we take her $6 because that is all she had to buy gifts for her children that year.”
But this year, they are worried. “We just don't have quite enough as we wished that we have this time of year.”
The storage facility is usually filled to the rim with toys. This year, they are at half the capacity.
Organizers fear some families may be left out this weekend. “We always get a little nervous this time of year we're just hoping to get one last push of nice gifts to come in.”
Organizers can't seem to figure out why the donations are low this year but they are hoping the community can come together for one last push. “It's the season to give and I'm just hoping that everybody does one little thing by sharing with us you know?”
The families are very appreciative of the donations and many of them go back to the toy fund the following year and volunteer for others in need.
There is still time to donate this year and there are several locations set-up for donations through the area.
