Son faces charges in deadly crash involving elderly mother

Charges have been filed against the son of an elderly woman who was killed while she was on her way to the hospital to see her dying husband.

Edward Smith, who was 48-years-old at the time of the crash, is now facing manslaughter and assault charges in connection to the crash that happened on South Avenue on March 5, 2012. He was charged Wednesday with manslaughter, vehicular manslaughter, assault, vehicular assault and driving while ability impaired by drugs.

Police say Smith lost control of his car and crashed it into a tree on South Avenue last March. His mother, Elizabeth Washington, was killed in the crash. The 88-year-old woman, who was in the front seat, was on her way to see her dying husband, retired Pastor Cleo Washington. Rev. Washington passed away about a half an hour after the crash.
