Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. Day and there will be several events held in Rochester.
The Martin Luther King Jr. Greater Rochester Commission will present its 28th Annual Collective Community Celebration in Kodak Hall at the Eastman Theater beginning at 9 a.m.
This year's theme is "The Beloved Community... Embracing the Strength to Love". The event will include speeches and the presentation of the Robert Cobbett Peace Award which is given to a person who works toward undoing racism and creating a multicultural society.
A memorial service will also be held at 11:30 a.m. at the Whipple Auditorium in the University of Rochester Medical Center on Elmwood Avenue.
Nazareth College will hold a commemoration service which will celebrate Dr. King's legacy with student speeches, singing, inspirational readings and dance. The event begins at 11:30 a.m. in the Golisano Academic Center Linehan Chapel located on East Avenue.
President Obama is also urging Americans to join in on the National Day of Service to honor the life and legacy of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by finding an event and serving others in your community.
