Images taken of the brains of retired NFL players reveal signs of early Alzheimer’s according to a new, small study.
Researchers at UCLA conducted brain scans on five former NFL players and compared them to the brains of healthy men who did not play football. The scans showed significantly more markers of Alzheimer’s disease in the brains of NFL players.
Whether their brains are showing early signs of Alzheimer’s because they have sustained significantly more head injuries, or if it is a sign of normal aging, has yet to be determined.
