One local school district is investigating hazing accusations involving a sports team.
Tens of thousands of kids in our area take part in high school athletics and as a parent, you hope it's a good experience for them but in Honeoye, an alleged incident of hazing on a school bus could bring an end to one season.
The superintendent of Honeoye schools tells us the hazing involved a number of students. A lot of effort has been put in by school districts throughout the area to address the issue of bullying and hazing is just another form of bullying. Most schools now have very explicit written codes of conduct to deal with it and that is apparently the case in Honeoye as well.
Earlier Tuesday, the District issued a written statement saying, “We have received evidence of violations of our code of conduct that would constitute hazing by some students participating in an extracurricular sport. We are investigating these matters thoroughly and will take all actions warranted." Additionally, the District tells News10NBC that no one was injured.
The superintendent also says there have been some suspensions and as a result, this sports team has canceled its remaining three games. But beyond that, they are not releasing much else such as how many students were hazed or the type of hazing that occurred.
While the district doesn't explicitly say what sports team it was, Section V athletics says it is getting reports that it was the boys’ varsity basketball team and we have confirmed that the team has canceled its game against Naples scheduled for Wednesday night.
This was a team that was having a very good season. According to Section V’s website, the Honeoye boys’ basketball team was 11-4 but that season is now in jeopardy.
The director of Section V tells I-team 10 he is trying to determine from the District's statement if this means the team will or will not participate in the upcoming playoffs later this month.
We have put in a call to the head basketball coach, but no one answered.
