nullAn updated version of the Violence Against Women Act is expected to pass through the Senate Thursday.

The 1994 federal law has been expanded twice, but was held up for renewal last year when the House and Senate couldn't reach an agreement on changes to the law.

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor says the gridlock comes from figuring out how to deal with domestic abuse on Native American tribal lands in the U.S.

Once the bill passes the senate, it will go to the House of Representatives for a vote.

Lawmakers from both sides say they're trying to find a compromise that will get it passed through the house.
