An early Sunday morning fire in Chili injured one firefighter and threatened eight residents.

The Chili Fire Department says the fire started around 12:30 a.m. at a three story house on Chili Avenue near Rose Road in Chili. When crews arrived on scene, they saw smoke and visible fire from the residence and quickly went to work. Eight people had to be helped from the blaze by firefighters.

Chili Deputy Chief Jason Elliotto tells News10NBC that the size of the house along with the weather conditions made the fire difficult to combat. At one point the roof on the third floor of the residence collapsed.

During the blaze, deputies say a firefighter was injured when he slipped on ice while preventing a resident from re-entering the home. Investigators say the resident was concerned about their cats. The fireman was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital with an injury to his arm.

Deputies tell News10NBC the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The Chili Fire Department was assisted on scene by the Gates Fire Department.

Red Cross is assisting the families displaced by the fire.
