Many people took a dive into the icy waters of Lake Ontario Sunday afternoon.
About 1,600 people ran into the frigid lake during the 13th Annual Polar Plunge in Charlotte. It was part of the Lakeside Winter Celebration.
The event raises money for the New York Special Olympics.
More than $225,000 was raised last year. Organizers are hoping to beat that mark this year.
“Great event, organized really well. You meet a lot of nice people here. Everybody's in it together. Nothing like a little cold water to wake you up on a Sunday, fantastic,” said participant Dave Barry.
“Really just jumping in the water and being a little crazy is a fun, great time. Got to go in twice, that's the rule, absolutely," said another participant.
The Lakeside Winter Celebration, now in its 29th year, also featured a chili cook-off, a snow sculpture contest and wine tastings.
