High school hockey sectionals gets underway Tuesday night. Fairport and Webster have earned the top seeds in Section V Class A and Class B hockey tournaments.
Webster Thomas and number two Churchville-Chili have first round byes. The Titans opened their season against Churchville and lost. But since then, Thomas has won ten straight and plan to defend their position as the top team in Class B.
Goalie Steve Speis is considered one of the best in the net in Section V. He's getting a lot of attention for six shutouts.
But this isn't a team about standouts. Four players have tallied 20 or more points this season.
Head coach David Evans says his team is poised to make a run this post season.
Coach David Evans said, “Guys have been stepping up. There have been guys out for disciplinary issues. People have been playing different roles and willing to sacrifice for each other. You can't ask for anything more.”
Ryan Kane, senior, said, “We have a full balanced attack we're not into heavy goal scorers there are a lot of people who give up the puck and share the wealth.”
Steve Speis, senior, said, “We're a big family playing with your brothers, there's a connection, it helps the team chemistry and it's always good to have.”
Webster Thomas and Churchville-Chili met last year during the Class B semifinals, the Saints winning that one. Thomas say they want another chance at a sectional title this year.
