At 5 a.m. Wednesday, Pope Benedict XVI made his first public appearance since announcing his resignation.

During his weekly address, the pope said he is resigning "for the good of the church". Later today, the pontiff will preside over Ash Wednesday services at the Vatican.

Ash Wednesday marks the official start of the 40 day period of Lent.

In Rochester, Saint Monica’s Church on Genesee Street gave out ashes beginning at midnight. The sign of the cross represents repentance to God.
